Are you taking your pet on vacation with you this summer? Here are some tips to remember when traveling with your pet.

** Bring food and water from home. Giving your pet different food from a different place can cause digestive problems. This is not something you want to deal with when you are on the road. You may want to bring your pet’s regular dishes or you can buy special travel dishes.

** Call ahead. Make sure the place you are going allows pets. Many places, including campgrounds, do not. You can check the internet for state-by-state “pet friendly” places to stay, restaurants, parks, beaches, etc.

**Attach a nametag. Make sure all information on the tag is correct and readable.

** Keep your pet on a leash.  For your pet’s safety, make sure the leash is on before you open the door of a car or a hotel room.

** Bring toys. Balls to play catch, bones to chew on and his favorite toys are always good to bring to keep your pet from becoming bored.

** Cover your car seats. If your pet sheds, this will be a good idea for you. Car seat covers are great and will keep hair off the seats.

** Exercise your pet before you leave. This will relax your pet and make traveling easier.

** Clean up after your pet. Wherever you go, make sure you have disposable bags specifically for pets. You can buy the kind that attach to the leash which makes it very easy to clean up.

** Car Sickness. This is more likely if a pet has a full stomach. Feed your pet a smaller amount of food at least 2 hours before you are planning to leave.

** Restrain your pet during travel. Use a harness, pet seat, barrier, wire cage or plastic crate. This is always safer for your pet and you.

**NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN A HOT CAR. Even if you park in the shade, the car gets very hot very quickly. Pets are unable to control body temperature. In just a few minutes, a hot car can cause a pet to get very sick or die.
